BRATSCH AT WORK (1999), titled RENDEZ-VOUS AVEC BRATSCH in French, is a 55 minute documentary about a much-loved and talented group of five French acoustic musicians who specialize in the gypsy music of Central Europe. The film follows them over a winter as they create, rehearse and perform a new show in Paris.
Following our "music video" of their gypsy song NANE TSORA (1991), we felt that this extraordinarily influential musical group deserved a longer film. Together as the same five musicians since 1985 and as Bratsch for ten years before that, Europe has heard the result of their work in their 12 recordings and in the birth of many younger groups performing in a similar style. Based on a history of traditional gypsy and Jewish music from Russia, Bulgaria, Rumania, Greece, Armenia, Turkey and France, Bratsch has developed original compositions in Rom and in French, played in their own unique style, and the film attempts to document their process of group creation.
